Cellulite can be reduced,
Ask us how!

    The Problem

While cheek dimples look cute and attractive, the dimples occurring on the thighs, buttocks, hips, and abdomen caused because of cellulite can be a sore sight for some.

Cellulite occurs by a buildup of fat underneath the skin that’s pulled downwards, making the skin appear lumpy, dimpled, and uneven. Though cellulite is a non-medical and harmless condition, it is an aesthetic concern and very common amongst 80% to 90% of women and affects less than 10% of men.

It is difficult to pinpoint a single cause that leads to cellulite as it is a result of several issues. Causes of cellulite can include hormones, age, genes, diet, and lifestyle. Let’s look at these causes:
    • Hormones – Hormonal changes at different stages of life such as puberty, and menopause can fluctuate oestrogen levels, resulting in various types of cellulite. Pregnancy-related hormones can also develop cellulite. Thyroid hormones, insulin, noradrenaline, and prolactin are also responsible for the development of cellulite.
    • Age – As you grow old, your skin becomes thinner, loses elasticity, and becomes more prone to sagging and muscle mass reduces. Physically inactive people can lose more than 3% to 5% of muscle mass every 10 years after the age of 30. Hence, fat in the body and cellulite start appearing and develop faster as it becomes more visible.
    • Genes – Yes, cellulite can be hereditary – so if your mother or grandmother had cellulite, you will likely have a high chance of getting it. However, if there is a lack of cellulite in your family history, it doesn’t mean that you won’t have it as there are several factors that lead to cellulite.
    • Diet – Refined carbs, processed foods, unhealthy fat, too much salt, and less fiber can all encourage the formation of cellulite. A healthy balanced diet with enough amino acids and protein can help with collagen production, hence reducing the appearance of cellulite.
    • Lifestyle – A sedentary or inactive lifestyle, like sitting or standing for a long time, smoking, and even wearing tight clothes that hinder blood circulation can contribute to the appearance of cellulite. However, even fit, and active people suffer from cellulite and so do non-smokers.
While the exact causes of cellulite remain narrow, developing a healthy lifestyle, eating a balanced diet, balancing hormones, and wearing breathable clothing can prevent cellulite.

Knowing about the different types of cellulite is essential to find the most effective treatment. Here are the three different types of cellulite:

    1. Flaccid cellulite – Also known as soft cellulite, flaccid cellulite is associated with sagging skin and is often found on body areas such as arms, stomach, hips, buttocks, and legs. It is not painful when touched and is more visible when you are lying down rather than standing. Flaccid cellulite is caused due to weight gain or lack of tone and hence, a rigorous diet and exercise routine can help improve its appearance.
    2. Compact cellulite – Compact or hard cellulite is termed the “orange peel syndrome”. This type of cellulite can affect all people, including slim and toned people, and is characterized by depressions and blemishes on the thighs, glutes, and hips that can feel hard and painful when touched. Compact cellulite is difficult to treat but some non-invasive procedures like (treatments to be mentioned) can help you get rid of compact cellulite.
    3. Edematous cellulite – Edematous cellulite, also known as poor circulation cellulite, is the least common form of cellulite that results from poor blood circulation caused by fluid retention. This cellulite can be very challenging to treat and may feel painful when touched. Most often it affects the lower legs and can alter their shape, but edematous cellulite can also affect the thighs and knees. Improving blood circulation, reducing fluid retention, lymphatic drainage, and manual massage technique can be beneficial to reduce edematous cellulite.

Cellulite is graded into four different categories from mild to severe:

    Grade 0
In Grade 0 there may be changes in the structure of the dermis beneath the skin which is not visible to the naked eye and the skin appears smooth.
    Grade 1
In Grade 1, the skin appears pale and is less elastic. There might not be visible bumps and dimples, but when the skin is pinched, an orange peel effect appears.
    Grade 2
In Grade 2, lumps and bumps start becoming visible, especially when you stand but disappear when you lie down.
    Grade 3
Grade 3 is the most severe grade of cellulite in which the dimples are visible every time and the area can be hard and painful.

    FAQ’s.

    What is cellulite?

Cellulite is a harmless skin condition in which excess fat deposits beneath the skin, resulting in lumpy, dimpled flesh on the thighs, hips, buttocks, and abdomen.

    When does it happen?

Cellulite occurs after puberty and becomes more noticeable with each passing year.

Are fat and cellulite the same?

Fat and cellulite are not the same, but fat cells getting bigger between fibrous bands under the skin can contribute to a bumpy appearance. Cellulite develops from the interaction of fat and connective tissue below the surface of your skin, resulting in a dimpled appearance.

Can weight loss help get rid of cellulite?

The appearance of cellulite decreases with weight loss in some cases but in many other cases weight loss can make the cellulite look worse because, with weight loss, the skin also loses laxity.

Do even skinny women have cellulite?

There is no specific cause of cellulite, and it can happen to anyone. Also, it is a myth that it happens only to people who are overweight. So, even if you are skinny, you can get cellulite on any part of the body.

Do topical treatments help get rid of cellulite?

Topical treatments such as creams, lotions, scrubs, and oils show a temporary reduction in the appearance of cellulite over time.

Can age impact the appearance of cellulite?

Skin loses elasticity as you age. Aging reduces muscle and increases fat deposits, which in turn increases cellulite.

What body parts are most prone to cellulite?

Cellulite is most commonly present on certain body parts like thighs, buttocks, hips, stomach, and calves.
