The Problem

Warts, milia, and skin tags are common skin growths that can affect people of all ages. Warts are small, rough growths caused by a viral infection. Milia are small, white bumps caused by trapped dead skin cells whereas skin tags are soft, benign growths made up of collagen and blood vessels. While these growths are generally harmless, it’s important to monitor any changes in size, shape, or color of these growths and consult a skin expert regarding the same.

Warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is a common viral infection. There are more than 100 types of HPV, and different types can cause different types of warts. Warts are spread through skin-to-skin contact with someone who has a wart, or by touching an object that has come into contact with the virus, such as a towel or a doorknob. The virus can enter the body through a cut or scrape on the skin. Certain factors can increase the risk of developing warts, such as having a weakened immune system, walking barefoot in public places, and biting or picking at fingernails or toenails. Warts are more common in children and young adults but can occur at any age.

  • Common Wart – Common warts usually grow on the back of your fingers, toes, and knees. These types of warts are rough, thick, and grainy, not serious, or painful and generally go away on their own.
  • Plantar Wart – Plantar warts, unlike other type of warts grow into your skin and not out of it. These types of warts grow on the soles of the feet and appear like a small hole surrounded by hard skin which makes activities like walking, running etc. uncomfortable.
  • Flat Wart – Flat warts are small flesh coloured, brownish or slightly yellowish warts that usually grow on the face, arms, and thighs. They are not painful and appear in areas where there is a cut or break in your skin.
  • Filiform Wart – Filiform warts are contagious and typically painless unless they occur in a sensitive area like a fold in your skin. They usually grow around your mouth, nose, sometimes on your neck or chin but can also spread to other parts of your body.
  • Periungual Wart – Periungual warts grow around fingernails and toenails and are common amongst nail biters. They are small, and painful, especially when it grows on the nail bed or under the nail but can grow larger and can also affect nail growth.

Milia are caused by dead skin cells becoming trapped in small pockets beneath the skin’s surface. This can happen when the skin does not exfoliate properly or when there is damage to the skin, such as from burns or blisters. Milia can also occur in newborns, possibly as a result of hormones passed from the mother to the baby during pregnancy. Certain skin care products, like heavy creams or lotions, can also contribute to the development of milia. While milia are generally harmless, they can be unsightly and may be removed for cosmetic reasons.

There are several types of milia, including:

  • Primary milia – These are the most common type of milia and occur in people of all ages.

  • Neonatal milia – These milia occur in new-borns and usually go away on their own within a few weeks.

  • Traumatic milia – These milia form at the site of an injury or surgical incision.

  • Multiple eruptive milia – This is a rare type of milia that occurs in clusters on the face and upper body.

  • Milia en plaque – This is a very rare type of milia that occurs in a large, flat patch on the skin.

While all types of milia are caused by the same underlying issue of dead skin cells becoming trapped beneath the skin’s surface, the different types may have different causes or occur in different populations.

The exact cause of skin tags is not fully understood, but they are thought to occur when clusters of collagen and blood vessels become trapped within thicker parts of the skin. Some factors that may contribute to the development of skin tags include –

  1. Friction – Skin tags can develop in areas where skin rubs against skin or clothing, such as the neck, underarms, or groin.
  2. Genetics – Skin tags may be more likely to occur in families, suggesting a genetic component.
  3. Age – Skin tags become more common with age, with middle-aged and older adults being more likely to develop them.
  4. Obesity – Skin tags are more common in people who are overweight or obese.
  5. Hormonal changes – Skin tags may be more likely to develop during pregnancy or in people with hormonal imbalances.

While skin tags are generally harmless, it’s important to have any unusual growths on the skin evaluated by a skin expert to rule out the possibility of a more serious condition.

There is only one type of skin tag, which is known as an acrochordon. However, skin tags can appear in different shapes, sizes, and colors, and they can occur in various locations on the body. The appearance of skin tags can vary, but they are generally soft and flesh-colored, and they usually hang off the skin by a thin stalk. Some common locations where skin tags can occur include the neck, armpits, groin, eyelids, and under the breasts. While skin tags are generally harmless, they can be removed for cosmetic reasons or if they become irritated or inflamed.

The Solution

There are several over-the-counter medications, such as salicylic acid for warts and cryotherapy kits, which can be used to remove warts, milia and skin tags. However, in more severe cases, a skin expert will suggest in-clinic treatments depending on the type of growth.
