    The Problem

After a certain age, people may experience hair loss due to various factors such as stress, hormones, genetics, and other reasons. Men often experience balding, while women commonly face thinning hair. Hair loss typically occurs in stages, and up to a certain point, it is possible to reduce or prevent it. However, there comes a stage when the hair follicles become unresponsive, making it challenging to address the issue. Fortunately, even at this stage, there are solutions available to manage hair loss.

Hair loss, a common concern for many individuals, can be attributed to a multitude of factors, ranging from genetic predisposition to hormonal fluctuations and lifestyle choices. The causes of hair loss are diverse, encompassing a combination of genetic, environmental, and physiological factors, each playing a significant role in the health and vitality of our hair.

    1. Hormonal Imbalance – Androgens play a role in female and male pattern baldness. Excess androgens, or male sex hormones are the most common cause of hair loss.

In female-pattern baldness androgen sensitivities may be exacerbated during oestrogen-related changes, such as use of contraceptives or menopause.

Male pattern baldness is related to an increase in an androgen called dihydrotestosterone (DHT) that not only binds to hair follicles and stops hair growth, but it may also decrease a hair’s life span overall. This is also called androgenetic alopecia.

    2. Thyroid Problems – An underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), or an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), can result in hair loss because each condition causes a hormonal imbalance. Autoimmune diseases of the thyroid gland, such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and Graves’ disease may also contribute to hair loss.

    3. Certain Medications – Hair loss can also be a side effect of several medications taken for common health problems. This is also known as “drug-induced hair loss.”
Blood-thinning medications, oral contraceptives, anti-depressants, anti-inflammatories, and beta and calcium channel blockers can all lead to thinning hair or baldness. Vitamin A based drugs called retinoids can also be a cause of hair loss. Some chemotherapy drugs used to treat cancer are known to cause total hair loss as they work to destroy cancer cells.

    4. Various Types of Alopecia Areata – Alopecia is an autoimmune condition in which your immune system attacks and destroys your hair follicles, inhibiting the growth of new hair. This autoimmune condition may result in thinning hair, patches of hair loss, partial balding, or total baldness, and it may be permanent or temporary.
    5. Other Autoimmune Diseases – Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and lupus are two examples of other autoimmune diseases that can result in hair loss apart from Alopecia Areata. This type of hair loss may not always be reversible and may sometimes be permanent. Medications and hair restoration surgeries may help compensate for this type of hair loss.

    6. Physical Trauma & Stress – When your body is under serious physical stress, the natural cycle of hair growth can be disrupted, resulting in hair loss, often in the form of thinning hair. Any shock to the system, such as a severe accident, surgery, burns, or serious illness, can also shock the hair follicles.
Hair loss can be triggered by an intense amount of stress, such as developing an illness or undergoing surgery that puts stress on the body and mind. Significant emotional stress like financial problems, death of a loved one, or loss of a home can disrupt the normal hair growth cycle

    7. Trichotillomania – Severe stress or anxiety may be associated with hair-pulling disorder, or trichotillomania. This mental health condition is related to obsessive-compulsive disorder and other types of anxiety disorders. Other signs of trichotillomania include feeling relief or pleasure after hairs are pulled, leading to noticeable patches of hair loss.
    8. Nutrient Deficiencies – Inadequate protein, biotin, zinc, and iron deficiency can lead to hair loss and diminished hair growth because they aid in the hair growth cycle and cellular turnover. Furthermore, it can also result in thinning hair and patches of baldness.
    9. Extreme Hair Care – Shampooing or blow-drying too frequently, repeatedly using heated styling tools, or too vigorously rubbing the scalp can all lead to hair loss. Perms, relaxers, and hair dyes may also contribute to hair damage and hair loss.

Hair loss can manifest in various forms, including male pattern baldness, female pattern hair loss, alopecia areata, and telogen effluvium, each with its own distinct characteristics and patterns. The types of hair loss are diverse, ranging from gradual thinning over time to sudden, patchy bald spots. Conditions such as androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata, and telogen effluvium are among the common types of hair loss experienced by individuals. Some of the types of hair loss are as follows:

    • Androgenetic Alopecia – Androgenetic alopecia is a common form of hair loss in men and women. In men, this condition is also known as male-pattern baldness. Hair is lost in a well-defined pattern, beginning above both temples. Hair also thins at the crown area often progressing to partial or complete baldness.

In women, the hair becomes thinner all over the head, and the hairline does not recede, and it rarely leads to total baldness.

    • Telogen Effluvium – Telogen effluvium is a form of temporary and reversible hair loss condition that usually happens several months after a stressful experience where stress pushes large numbers of hair follicles into a resting phase.

    • Anagen Effluvium – Anagen Effluvium is an abnormal and rapid loss of hair caused by drugs used for cancer treatment or exposure to certain toxic chemicals.

    • Alopecia Areata – Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disorder that usually results in unpredictable, patchy hair loss. In most cases, hair falls out in small patches around the size of a quarter. However, alopecia areata can affect wider areas of the scalp.

    • Tinea Capitis – Tinea capitis is a fungal infection of the scalp hairs, also known as ringworm and herpes tonsurans infection that is caused primarily by the dermatophyte species Micros Porum and Trichophyton. The fungi can penetrate the hair follicle outer root sheath and ultimately may invade the hair shaft, resulting hair loss.

    • Cicatricial Alopecia – Cicatricial alopecia, also known as scarring, is an inflammatory condition that destroys hair follicles, causing scarring and permanent hair loss.

    • Hair Shaft Abnormalities – Physical damage to the hair fibre determined by genetic or environmental defects such as poor or inappropriate hair care results in hair loss.

    • Hypotrichosis – Hypotrichosis is a rare condition in which there is little or no hair growth on the head, the eyebrows and the eyelids, or other areas of the body. Hair in such areas usually stay short and is dry and rough.

Hair loss typically progresses through several stages, starting with a subtle thinning of the hair and eventually leading to more noticeable and extensive balding in certain areas of the scalp. The stages of hair loss can be categorized into a continuum, beginning with a minimal loss of hair density, and progressing to more advanced stages where significant areas of the scalp may become bald or devoid of hair.

    • Stage 1: There’s little or no hair loss or hairline recession.
    • Stage 2: There’s slight hair loss near the skin between your ears and forehead (temples).
    • Stage 3: You have deep hairline recession around your temples, and your hairline may have an “M” or “U” shape.
    • Stage 4: You have very deep hairline recession and a loss of hair at the top of your head (crown).
    • Stage 5: Your hairline recession connects to the bald spot on your crown.
    • Stage 6: The hair between your temples and crown is thinning or gone.
    • Stage 7: You have no hair on the top of your head and a thin band of hair around the side of your head.

    FAQ’s.

Why does my hair fall out so easily?

Hair loss is an extremely common occurrence and affects most people in varying degrees at some point in their lives. Hair loss can occur due to one or a mix of the following: severe stress, genetics, illnesses such as thyroid disease and anemia, nutritional changes, hormonal changes related to puberty, pregnancy and menopause, vitamin D deficiency, or side effects of strong medication (such as chemotherapy).

    Why is my hair thinning?

Hair thinning happens because of hormone testosterone which gets converted into dihydrotesterone which is the main cause of hairthinning

How many strands of hair fall is normal in a day?

It is normal to lose about 100 – 150 hair strands every day.

Is there a difference between male and female hair loss?

Both men and women can experience androgenetic alopecia, which is triggered by hormones and genetics. Hair loss often occurs faster and more extensively in men. In fact, hair loss in men may manifest as early as adolescence with the onset of hair recession near the temples, and the appearance of the characteristic “M” shaped hairline. Hair loss in women, on the other hand, experience diffuse thinning at the top of the head, which shows at the part line. Diffuse thinning can occur as early as their 20s and 30s, due to hormonal changes and ageing. In some cases, hair thinning and baldness in women may also be caused by treatable illnesses such as thyroid disease or anemia.

    Can stress cause hair loss?

This depends on the amount of the stress you’re experiencing and how much effect it has on the normal functions of your body. Normally, the mild stress we experience on a day-to-day basis is not enough to cause hair loss. However, severe stress that is a result of serious or traumatic events, such as divorce, a drastic change in diet, surgery, or extreme weight loss, may cause a physiological imbalance in your system. This physiological change often leads to hair loss because it “shocks” your body’s normal routine. Thus, many of its natural functions are disrupted, which includes your natural hair cycle. The sudden physiological changes in your body may trigger a larger amount of hairs on your head to go into a “resting phase”, and thus it may seem that you’re only losing hair and that there is no growth.

Can shampoo and styling cause hair loss?

The act of shampooing merely only loosens hair that is about to fall out. Excessive hair styling may weaken or damage hair, and lead to hair breakage. However, both methods have not been proven to be direct, underlying causes for hair loss.

    How to treat hair thinning

Medical treatments include topical and oral medicines, like minoxidil  and Anti DHT tablet such as finasteride; dutasteride and herbal dht tablets . It is important to note that these treatments require continuous maintenance.

How to stop hair loss in women? Does stem cell therapy work for hair loss?

Identifying the cause of your hair loss is the first and most important step you should consider before taking any kind of medication. In order to diagnose a case such as this, several biopsy points must be taken from the scalp, which will then be sent to a respected university pathology department that specializes in hair to ensure a correct diagnosis.

The most common diagnosis of hair loss in women is androgenetic alopecia, for which there is a 99% success rate in treating with stem cell based therapy; while in alopecia areata and lupus, there’s about 50% success rate. It must be noted, however, that stem cell based therapy may have limited benefit for patients with a scarring type of alopecia or conditions like lichen planopilaris.

How can I get my hair in better condition?

On a superficial level, there is no harm in having a well-balanced diet and consuming an adequate amount of vitamin B and iron. Getting regular checkups to diagnose and address any underlying causes, such as anemia or thyroid disease, is another mode of prevention one should consider.

When does an individual need to go & see a Hair Loss Specialist?

When someone is suffering from slow hair growth, hair thinning, a dry or oily scalp, brittle hair, premature bald spots, scaling on the scalp, an irritated or itchy scalp, or their scalp is becoming more visible over time, it is time to book a visit to see a hair loss specialist. When you visit a hair loss specialist they will inspect your hair and scalp to ascertain the probable cause of the problem. Once the cause has been found, they will recommend a treatment which is best suited to your particular hair loss problem to be able to eradicate it as soon as possible.

Can a person’s lifestyle play a role in hair loss?

Hair loss is triggered by many different factors and one of these is an individual’s lifestyle. Sleep problems, stress, both psychologically and socially, physical activity, hormones and diet can all cause hair loss. Hair styling techniques and products can also be a cause of hair loss.

How can diet cause hair loss?

An unhealthy diet can cause hair loss which is because the body needs essential nutrients so it can function properly. Diets lacking in iron and protein will affect hair growth because these are the nutrients required by the follicles to grow hair. Excessive consumption of alcohol and smoking a lot can also be a trigger for hair loss.

Can washing your hair a lot cause hair loss?

Washing your hair on a regular basis will not cause hair loss. When washing your hair be aware that particular shampoos and other hair products can contain chemicals which make the hair dry out, which results in the hair becoming brittle and more prone to breakage, causing hair loss.

Is female hair loss the same as male hair loss?

A number of different factors cause female hair loss; these include physical stress, emotional stress, thyroid deficiencies, pregnancy and a host of medications and medical conditions. On the other hand however, male hair loss is typically the result of genetics, Androgenetic alopecia. 99% of hair loss in males is caused by Androgenetic alopecia.

Are all causes of hair loss the same?

Everyone’s experience of hair loss is different. Hair loss can be either temporary or permanent. Hair loss can be a result of hair shedding from certain areas of the head, or all over. For the majority of females experiencing hair loss, permanent hair loss is the most concerning, as temporary hair loss can be dealt with and repaired over time.

What are the risk factors of hair loss?

A number of factors can increase your risk of hair loss, including:

    • A family history of balding on your mother’s or father’s side
    • Significant weight loss
    • Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes and lupus
    • Stress
    • Poor nutrition-low protein diet
    • Any illness like typhoid,dengue,covid
    • Keto diet

How to prevent hair loss ?

Most baldness is caused by genetics (male-pattern baldness and female-pattern baldness). This type of hair loss is not preventable.

These tips may help you avoid preventable types of hair loss:

    • Be gentle with your hair. Use a detangler and avoid tugging when brushing and combing, especially when your hair is wet. A wide-toothed comb might help prevent pulling out hair. Avoid harsh treatments such as hot rollers, curling irons, hot-oil treatments and permanents. Limit the tension on hair from styles that use rubber bands, barrettes and braids.
    • Ask your doctor about medications and supplements you take that might cause hair loss.
    • Protect your hair from sunlight and other sources of ultraviolet light.
    • Stop smoking. Some studies show an association between smoking and baldness in men.
    • If you’re being treated with chemotherapy, ask your doctor about a cooling cap. This cap can reduce your risk of losing hair during chemotherapy.
    • Well balanced diet with equal proportion of protein, fats, carbs plays an important role.

    Can stress cause hair loss?

Yes, stress and hair loss can be related.

Three types of hair loss can be associated with high stress levels:

    • Telogen effluvium – In telogen effluvium (TEL-o-jun uh-FLOO-vee-um), significant stress pushes large numbers of hair follicles into a resting phase. Within a few months, affected hairs might fall out suddenly when simply combing or washing your hair.
    • Trichotillomania is an irresistible urge to pull out hair from your scalp, eyebrows or other areas of your body. Hair pulling can be a way of dealing with negative or uncomfortable feelings, such as stress, tension, loneliness, boredom or frustration.
    • Alopecia areata – A variety of factors are thought to cause alopecia areata , possibly including severe stress. With alopecia areata, the body’s immune system attacks the hair follicles — causing hair loss.

Stress and hair loss don’t have to be permanent. And if you get your stress under control, your hair might grow back.

If you notice sudden or patchy hair loss or more than usual hair loss when combing or washing your hair, talk to your doctor. Sudden hair loss can signal an underlying medical condition that requires treatment. If needed, your doctor might also suggest treatment options for your hair loss.

What’s the most effective hair loss treatment?

Minoxidil  is regarded as one of the most effective hair loss treatments. Topical minoxidil can be an effective treatment for androgenic hair loss.Protein based serums also help in hairloss.

    What illnesses cause hair loss?

There are a wide range of conditions that can bring on hair loss, with some of the most common being pregnancy, thyroid disorders, and anemia. Others include autoimmune diseases, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and skin conditions such as psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis, Rogers says.

What are the treatments for hair loss ?

    • Micrograft Hair Treatment – It is a USFDA approved technology to create a unique and powerful formula of stem cells and hair follicles from a micro skin graft. Instead of your blood to give you superior results for hair loss and hair thinning.
    • PRF Hair Treatment – PRP has been the gold standard for plasma therapy for Hair growth treatments for quite some time. However, with ongoing research and trials, advances in this field have introduced a new and much more enhanced treatment which is the next generation of Plasma treatment called PRF or Platelet Rich Fibrin. PRF is also derived from your own blood – simple as doing a blood test. However, the results and treatment experience are far superior to PRP
    • No Anti-coagulants
    • Virtually Painless
    • Platelet Count
    • Long term Results due to increased growth factors
    • Laser/Comb Helmet – Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) helps in hairloss . It is cleared for hair growth and the treatment of hair loss. Like other non-invasive treatments, some patients get better results than others.  LLLT is a non-chemical, non-invasive option to help people grow fuller, thicker, healthier hair.
    • Mesotherapy – Mesotherapy is the science of delivering vitamins & nutrients in to the mesodermal layer of tissue under the skin. The two most important considerations are the technique used and the ingredients that are being delivered. For patients who are experiencing hair loss we most often suggest the use of Stem cells. Stem Cells have the ability to transform into almost any type of cell in the body. They are also self-generating, which means they can create identical copies of themselves that will divide into more specialized cells.  These new cells are then injected into the scalp to replace the damaged cells, generating hair growth.
    • Hair transplant – This type of surgery can give you lasting results. A surgeon removes individual hair follicles from one part of your scalp and transplants them to thinning or balding areas.
    • Hair system is created using human or synthetic hair hand-woven onto a particular base of material such as lace. The base is then adhered to the individual’s head with the preferred method of attachment (tape or adhesive), and cut and blended to make it undetectable.
